Twice a year, a temple carved into a cliff in southern Egypt does something that looks like magic. In the cold darkness before dawn, thousands of people crowd into a 3,000-year-old hall. Then a shaft of golden sunlight slides through the entrance, travels the length of the temple, and falls on the face of Ramses II.
This guide covers what happens during the Abu Simbel solar alignment, what we know about the 2026 dates and timing, why it happens, how to get there from Aswan, what to expect on the day, and how to plan for the next one.
What Is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?
The Abu Simbel Sun Festival is the popular name for a solar alignment at the Great Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel, in Aswan Governorate near Egypt's southern border with Sudan. On two mornings a year, sunlight enters the temple's entrance, passes through its halls, and reaches the inner sanctuary, a chamber about 60 metres inside the rock.
There is also a wider festival atmosphere around it. In 2026, the General Authority for Cultural Palaces organised a Sun Alignment Festival from 17 to 22 October, with six Egyptian folk-art troupes performing in Abu Simbel and across Aswan (source: Egyptian Gazette).
When Is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival in 2026?
There are two dates every year: 22 February and 22 October. In 2026, both have now happened.
Abu Simbel Sun Festival on February 22, 2026
The February alignment fell on Sunday, 22 February 2026. Reports from the day said at least 2,000 visitors gathered at the temple, with Aswan's governor describing designated gates and pathways to manage the crowds (source: Gulf News). The February alignment falls shortly after sunrise. We have not confirmed an official clock time for February 2026, so check the exact time with your guide or operator for future years.
Abu Simbel Sun Festival on October 22, 2026
The October alignment took place on Thursday, 22 October 2026. According to Ahram Online, citing Aswan Governor Amr Lashin, sunlight cut about 60 metres through the temple hall and reached the sanctuary at 6:53 am, lighting three of the four seated statues for around 20 minutes. Around 7,000 visitors watched, and the temple doors had opened at 2:00 am that morning, with queues building from the early hours (source: EgyptToday).
When Is the Next Abu Simbel Sun Festival? (2027 Dates)
Monday, 22 February 2027
Friday, 22 October 2027
The dates are fixed by the sun, so they do not move from year to year. Clock times can shift by a few minutes, and Egypt changes its clocks in summer, so confirm the exact time before you go.
What Happens During the Abu Simbel Solar Alignment?
Here is the sequence on the morning of the alignment, based on reports from the October 2026 event:
Before dawn: Visitors queue outside the gates, and in 2026 the doors opened at 2:00 am. Some people even sleep outside overnight to secure a place.
Inside the temple: Visitors pack into the dark hall in front of the sanctuary. The Associated Press described people huddled tightly in near-darkness before the statues.
The beam arrives: At sunrise, a ray of sunlight enters the temple entrance and travels about 60 metres down the axis of the temple to the sanctuary.
The statues light up: The light falls on Ramses II, Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhty. The fourth statue, Ptah, stays in shadow.
About 20 minutes later: The beam moves on and the sanctuary returns to darkness.
What Time Does the Sun Alignment Happen at Abu Simbel?
This is where many guides get it wrong. Before the event, different websites quoted very different times: some gave 5:53 am, some 5:58 am, others simply "around 6 am".
The officially reported time for 22 October 2026 was 6:53 am. In other words, a guide quoting 5:58 would have had you looking at the wrong clock time. Part of the reason is that Egypt moves its clocks forward in summer, so the same sunrise falls at a different time on the clock in October than in February. Use these practical rules:
Be inside the temple well before sunrise. The doors opened at 2:00 am in October 2026.
Treat any published time as approximate and confirm locally the day before.
The alignment lasts about 20 minutes, so the window is short. Some sources say up to 25 minutes.
Why Does the Sun Illuminate Ramses II's Temple?
The temple was built so that its main axis points toward the sunrise on these days. The ancient architects cut the temple deep into the cliff, so that at the right time of year the first sunlight would travel the whole way to the sanctuary. That shows deliberate design.
Why those two dates? Here is what we can say honestly:
A popular explanation is that the dates mark Ramses II's birthday and the anniversary of his coronation. This is widely repeated, but it is not firmly documented, and some Egyptologists question it.
Another explanation is that the alignment is linked to the agricultural year. The Egyptian Gazette notes that the October date is associated with the harvest season, while February is linked to the Nile flood and growing season.
The dates moved. In the 1960s the temples were cut apart and rebuilt on higher ground to save them from the rising waters behind the Aswan High Dam. It is often said that the move shifted the alignment by about one day, so it now falls on 22 February and 22 October rather than the 21st.
The honest summary: the alignment is real, deliberate and extraordinary, but the reasons for the exact dates are not fully known.
Which Statues Are Illuminated Inside the Temple?
Four seated statues sit in the sanctuary. Three are lit:
Ramses II, the deified pharaoh
Amun-Ra, the king of the gods
Ra-Horakhty, a form of the sun god
The fourth statue, Ptah, is linked here with darkness and the underworld, and stays in shadow. This is often presented as deliberate, so that the beam avoids the god of darkness.
How to Attend the Abu Simbel Sun Festival in 2026
The 2026 festival days have passed, but everything below applies directly to the 2027 alignments.
What Time Should You Arrive?
Plan to arrive at the temple gates in the middle of the night or very early morning. In October 2026, the doors opened at 2:00 am, and the crowd grew from about 2,000 people at opening to more than 6,000 over the following hours, then to roughly 7,000 reported visitors in total. Those at the front get the best view of the sanctuary.
What Should You Bring to Abu Simbel?
Passport or ID, since security checks are standard
Warm layers. Dawn can be cool, especially in February
Water and a small snack, since you may wait several hours
A fully charged phone or camera. Follow staff instructions, and avoid flash inside the temple
Comfortable shoes and patience, since the queues are long
Cash, because card payments are not guaranteed
What Should You Expect on the Festival Day?
Big crowds and a lot of waiting, with tight, dark conditions inside
A short moment of light, about 20 minutes, so be ready to watch rather than only photograph
A festive atmosphere outside, with folk performances in the festival programme
Special ticket pricing on festival days. One travel guide reports 1,200 EGP for adults and 600 EGP for students, but check this before you travel
A very early start and a long day, so plan rest afterwards
How to Get to Abu Simbel for the 2026 Sun Festival
Abu Simbel from Aswan
Abu Simbel is roughly 280 km south of Aswan, and the road trip takes around 3 to 3.5 hours each way in normal conditions. For the alignment, that means either leaving Aswan around 3 am or staying overnight in Abu Simbel village, according to travel reports.
Abu Simbel by Road or Flight
By road: an organised excursion from Aswan, usually in the very early hours
By flight: a short domestic flight to Abu Simbel is possible from Aswan, and many travellers fly in the day before
By Nile cruise: many Luxor and Aswan cruise itineraries include Abu Simbel as an excursion
Can You Visit Abu Simbel as a Day Trip?
From Aswan, yes, as a long early-morning day trip. From Hurghada, no: it is too far to do in a single day. If you are staying on the Red Sea coast, the realistic ways to include Abu Simbel are as part of a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, or a multi-day trip.
On Luxreisen's Nile cruises, Abu Simbel is offered as an optional excursion because of the very early departure and long driving distance. See our 4-night / 5-day Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan and our 3-night Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor, or browse all our Nile cruises.
Is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival Worth Visiting?
It depends on what you want.
It is worth it if you love ancient history and astronomy, want a once-in-a-trip moment, and don't mind a very early start, big crowds and a long wait for a short event. Seeing light travel 60 metres into a 3,000-year-old temple is memorable, and it shows how precisely the ancient builders planned.
It may not be for you if you dislike crowds, standing in the dark for hours, or very early mornings. In that case, a regular visit gives you the temples without the crush.
Abu Simbel Sun Festival vs Visiting on a Regular Day
Some guides suggest the days just before and after the 22nd show part of the effect with smaller crowds. Treat that with caution: the full alignment is on the 22nd, so do not plan around it.
Tips for Planning Your Abu Simbel Trip in 2026
Book early for 2027. Hotels in Aswan and Abu Simbel and Nile cruise cabins fill up around the festival dates.
Decide how you will get there. Road excursion, flight, or a Nile cruise with the optional Abu Simbel excursion.
Consider staying overnight near Abu Simbel to avoid a 3 am drive.
Prepare for crowds and darkness. Bring a light, small bag, and keep your belongings secure.
Check the exact time locally the day before. Do not rely on a time from a website.
Add the Nefertari temple. The smaller temple of Queen Nefertari is quieter after the alignment.
Combine it with Luxor. If you are coming from the Red Sea, see Luxor's temples too. Our Luxor Solar Eclipse 2027 and bus day trip to Luxor are a good way to add Karnak and the Valley of the Kings.
